The news link off the homepage (https://opendistro.github.io/for-elasticsearch/news.html) hasn’t been updated since August and makes the project look a bit abandoned! Should it be removed?

Agree! We are working on plans to revamp the webpage and updating the content to make it more current. It will take some time but it is one of our priorities.
