As Open Distro stated it will not be a fork I suggest to link version numbers to the elastic search upstream versions for better clarity, e.g. 0.6.5.4

This is a good suggestion and we were thinking in the same direction. However, the distribution version number is not only linked to ES and Kibana versions, but also to the versions of different plugins. At some point there might be few releases linked to upgrades of plugins only.
